What to say instead of “This might be a dumb question”

Short answer: say “Quick question, to make sure we're aligned…”

DON'T SAY
“Sorry, this might be a dumb question…”
SAY THIS
“Quick question, to make sure we're aligned…”
It frames your question as helping the group, not exposing a gap.

When to use it

Use it any time you need to check your understanding in a group: a number that doesn't add up, a term nobody defined, a plan with a step that seems to be missing. If you're confused, someone else in the room usually is too, so the question helps everyone.

Example

You: “Quick question, to make sure we're aligned: is the March date for the beta or the full launch?”

Manager: “Good catch. Beta. Full launch is April.”

In an email or Slack message

In a meeting chat or Slack thread, drop the apology entirely and lead with the question: “To make sure we're aligned: is March the beta or the full launch?” Short questions get fast answers.
