How to suggest an idea in a meeting without sounding unsure

Short answer: say “I recommend we try X. Here's why.”

DON'T SAY
“I'm not sure if this makes sense, but maybe we could…”
SAY THIS
“I recommend we try X. Here's why.”
A clear recommendation gives people something to react to.

When to use it

Use it when you have a suggestion and the discussion is going in circles. A recommendation with one reason attached is easier for people to agree with, push back on or improve than a hedge. You can still be wrong; you've just made it easy to discuss.

Example

You: “I recommend we pilot the new form with one team first. Here's why: if it breaks, it breaks small.”

Colleague: “Makes sense. Which team?”

In an email or Slack message

In writing, put the recommendation in the first line and the reason in the second: “Recommendation: pilot with the support team first. Reason: lower risk, faster feedback.” Then invite objections by a set time.
