How to answer when you don't have the experience in an interview

Short answer: say “I haven't done that directly. The closest was when I rebuilt our intake process.”

DON'T SAY
“Uh, no, I don't have experience with that.”
SAY THIS
“I haven't done that directly. The closest was when I rebuilt our intake process.”
Bridging to related experience keeps you in the conversation.

When to use it

Use it when an interviewer asks about a skill or situation you haven't dealt with directly. Be honest, then bridge to the closest thing you have done and what it taught you. You stay in the conversation instead of ending it with “no.”

Example

Interviewer: “Have you managed a vendor migration?”

You: “I haven't done that directly. The closest was when I rebuilt our intake process: I coordinated three teams and moved everything over in a month.”

In an email or Slack message

In a cover letter, use the same bridge: “While I haven't led a vendor migration, I rebuilt our intake process, coordinating three teams through the switch.”
