How to end a job interview

Short answer: say “I'm excited about this role. What are the next steps?”

DON'T SAY
“So… I guess that's it?”
SAY THIS
“I'm excited about this role. What are the next steps?”
Stating interest and asking about next steps ends on a confident note.

When to use it

Use it when the interview is wrapping up. Say plainly that you want the job, then ask about next steps. You leave on a confident note and know what to expect, so you're not guessing about when to follow up.

Example

Interviewer: “That's all from me.”

You: “I'm excited about this role. What are the next steps?”

Interviewer: “We'll be in touch within a week.”

In an email or Slack message

Repeat your interest in the thank-you note: “I'm excited about this role and look forward to hearing about next steps.”
