How to answer “Why are you leaving your job?”

Short answer: say “I've grown a lot there, and I'm ready for a role with more ownership.”

DON'T SAY
“My manager is awful.”
why you're leaving
SAY THIS
“I've grown a lot there, and I'm ready for a role with more ownership.”
Looking forward sounds ambitious. Complaining sounds risky.

When to use it

Use it when you're asked why you want to leave, even if the real reason is a difficult manager. Talk about what you're moving toward, not what you're running from. Interviewers worry that complaints about a past employer will become complaints about them.

Example

Interviewer: “Why are you looking to leave?”

You: “I've grown a lot there, and I'm ready for a role with more ownership, like leading projects end to end.”

In an email or Slack message

The same framing works in a recruiter message: “I'm looking for a role with more ownership of projects end to end.” Keep it positive and specific.
