How to explain a gap in your resume

Short answer: say “I took a year off for family and kept my skills current with two certifications.”

DON'T SAY
“Sorry, I know there's a gap on my resume…”
SAY THIS
“I took a year off for family and kept my skills current with two certifications.”
Stated plainly, with what you did, the gap stops being a topic.

When to use it

Use it when a gap in your work history comes up. Say plainly why you took the time and anything you did to stay current. Don't apologize. A calm, short answer usually settles it, and the interview moves on.

Example

Interviewer: “I see a gap in 2024.”

You: “I took a year off for family and kept my skills current with two certifications.”

Interviewer: “Great, thanks.”

In an email or Slack message

You can address it in one line on your resume or LinkedIn: “Career break: family (2024). Completed two industry certifications.” Use your own real details.
