What to say when you need a moment to think in an interview

Short answer: say “That's a good question. Let me take a second to think.”

DON'T SAY
“Um… uh… hmm…”
SAY THIS
“That's a good question. Let me take a second to think.”
A calm, brief pause reads as thoughtful, not stuck.

When to use it

Use it when you get a tough question and need a second. Saying you'll take a moment buys time calmly. A few seconds of silence feels long to you but looks thoughtful to the interviewer.

Example

Interviewer: “Tell me about a time you failed.”

You: “That's a good question. Let me take a second to think.”

You: “Okay. Early in my last role, I…”

In an email or Slack message

In a video interview, it's also fine to say “Let me jot down a couple of notes” for a longer question. Keep the pause short and come back with structure.
