How to make a decision as a team leader

Short answer: say “I've heard everyone. We're going with option B, and here's why.”

DON'T SAY
“I'm not sure. What do you all think?”
when you need to decide
SAY THIS
“I've heard everyone. We're going with option B, and here's why.”
Teams want input, but they need a leader to decide.

When to use it

Use it when you've gathered input and it's time to decide. Show you've listened, state the decision, and give the reason. Teams want a say, but going around in circles is frustrating. Someone needs to decide, and that's you.

Example

You: “I've heard everyone. We're going with option B, and here's why: it's faster to test.”

Team member: “Makes sense. Let's go.”

In an email or Slack message

Post the decision in writing so nobody misses it: “Decision: option B. Why: faster to test. Thanks for the input, especially on the risks.”
