How to support your team as a manager

Short answer: say “Let's meet for 15 minutes every Tuesday. Bring blockers and wins.”

DON'T SAY
“Let me know if you need anything.”
SAY THIS
“Let's meet for 15 minutes every Tuesday. Bring blockers and wins.”
A regular slot makes support real instead of theoretical.

When to use it

Use it when you want to support someone, especially a new or struggling team member. A regular, short meeting makes support something that actually happens. “Let me know” puts the work of asking on them, and most people won't.

Example

You: “Let's meet for 15 minutes every Tuesday. Bring blockers and wins.”

New hire: “That would help a lot.”

In an email or Slack message

Send the calendar invite right away, with the agenda in it: “Weekly check-in: blockers, wins, anything on your mind.” A recurring invite makes it stick.

Quick drill
