How to ask to be considered for a promotion or new role

Short answer: say “I'd like to be considered for the lead role. Here's why I'm a strong fit.”

DON'T SAY
“I'm not sure I'm ready, but I'd like to be considered…”
SAY THIS
“I'd like to be considered for the lead role. Here's why I'm a strong fit.”
Asking directly shows the confidence the role requires.

When to use it

Use it when an internal role or promotion opens up. Ask directly, then give your reasons. If you start by doubting yourself, you've given the decision-maker a reason to say no before they've heard your case.

Example

You: “I'd like to be considered for the lead role. Here's why I'm a strong fit.”

Director: “Go ahead.”

You: “I've run the weekly planning for six months and trained the last two hires.”

In an email or Slack message

By email: “I'd like to be considered for the team lead role. I've run our weekly planning for six months and trained two new hires. Could we talk this week?”
