DON'T SAY
“Whatever you think is fair is fine with me.”
SAY THIS
“Based on the role and market data, I'm looking for 85 to 95 thousand.”
Naming a researched range anchors the conversation.

When to use it

Use it when you're asked about salary expectations. Research the role and give a range based on that research. A specific range anchors the conversation where you want it. “Whatever's fair” leaves the number entirely up to them. Use your own researched figures.

Example

Recruiter: “What are your salary expectations?”

You: “Based on the role and market data, I'm looking for 85 to 95 thousand.”

Recruiter: “That's within our range.”

In an email or Slack message

In an application form or email: “Based on the role and current market data, my expected range is $85,000–$95,000, depending on the full package.” Replace with your own numbers.
