How to counter a salary offer

Short answer: say “If we can get to 92, I'm ready to sign today.”

DON'T SAY
“Is there any way you could maybe do a little more?”
SAY THIS
“If we can get to 92, I'm ready to sign today.”
A specific number plus a commitment is easy to say yes to.

When to use it

Use it when an offer is close but not quite where you want it. Name a specific number and pair it with a commitment, like signing today. It's a clear, closeable deal, and much easier to approve than a vague “a little more.”

Example

Recruiter: “The offer is 88.”

You: “If we can get to 92, I'm ready to sign today.”

Recruiter: “Let me check. I think we can do 91.”

In an email or Slack message

By email: “I'm excited about this role. If we can get the base to $92,000, I'm ready to sign today.” Only commit to signing if you mean it, and use your own numbers.
