How to bring a problem to your boss with a solution

Short answer: say “I see two options. Option A is faster, so that's my pick. Okay to go ahead?”

DON'T SAY
“What do you want me to do?”
SAY THIS
“I see two options. Option A is faster, so that's my pick. Okay to go ahead?”
Bringing a pick with the problem shows judgment.

When to use it

Use it when you hit a problem you can't solve alone. Bring the options and your pick, then ask for a go-ahead. Your manager can say yes in seconds, and you show judgment instead of handing the problem upward.

Example

You: “The client wants changes after sign-off. I see two options. Option A is faster, so that's my pick. Okay to go ahead?”

Manager: “Go with A.”

In an email or Slack message

In a message: “Problem: client changes after sign-off. Option A: add to this sprint (faster). Option B: next sprint (safer). My pick: A. Okay to proceed?” This format works well for quick approvals.
