How to ask your boss for a few minutes of their time

Short answer: say “Do you have 10 minutes today? I need a decision on the launch date.”

DON'T SAY
“Just checking in to see if you maybe have a second?”
SAY THIS
“Do you have 10 minutes today? I need a decision on the launch date.”
A time box and a clear ask make it easy to say yes.

When to use it

Use it when you need a decision or input from someone busy. Saying how long it will take and what it's for lets them decide right away whether now works, and helps them come prepared. Vague “got a second?” requests are easy to put off.

Example

You: “Do you have 10 minutes today? I need a decision on the launch date.”

Manager: “I'm free at 2. Bring the options.”

In an email or Slack message

In Slack: “Do you have 10 min today? I need a decision on the launch date: the 14th or the 21st. I can also send the details here if that's easier.” Including the options often gets you the answer without a meeting.
