What to ask your boss at the end of a 1:1

Short answer: say “What's the most important thing I can deliver for you this month?”

DON'T SAY
“Is there anything else you need from me?”
end of a 1:1
SAY THIS
“What's the most important thing I can deliver for you this month?”
It aims your effort at what your boss actually values.

When to use it

Use it at the end of a 1:1 or after a goals conversation. “Anything else?” usually gets “No, we're good.” Asking about the most important thing this month gets a real answer about what your manager cares about, so you can focus there.

Example

You: “What's the most important thing I can deliver for you this month?”

Manager: “Honestly, getting the renewal deck ready before the 20th.”

In an email or Slack message

If your 1:1s are by message, try: “Looking at this month, what's the one thing you most need from me?” Write down the answer and refer back to it in your next update.
