How to ask for a promotion

Short answer: say “I'm already doing work at the next level. Here are three examples.”

DON'T SAY
“I've been here three years, so…”
SAY THIS
“I'm already doing work at the next level. Here are three examples.”
Promotions follow impact, not tenure.

When to use it

Use it when you want to make the case for a promotion. Show that you're already doing work at the next level, with specific examples. Time in the job alone rarely persuades. Proof that you're already doing the bigger job usually does.

Example

You: “I'm already doing work at the next level. Here are three examples.”

Manager: “Walk me through them.”

In an email or Slack message

Write the examples down before you meet: what you did, what level of work it reflects, and the result. Sharing it in writing makes it easier to pass up the chain.
