What to say when you disagree with feedback

Short answer: say “That's not how I saw it. Can you walk me through what you noticed?”

DON'T SAY
“That's not fair.”
SAY THIS
“That's not how I saw it. Can you walk me through what you noticed?”
Curiosity lets you correct the record without sounding defensive.

When to use it

Use it when you think feedback is based on an incomplete picture. Saying you saw it differently is honest, and asking what they noticed gets you the facts. If there's a misunderstanding, you can correct it calmly with specifics.

Example

Manager: “You haven't been responsive to the team.”

You: “That's not how I saw it. Can you walk me through what you noticed?”

Manager: “A few messages last week went unanswered for two days.”

In an email or Slack message

Avoid disputing feedback over chat if you can. Ask for a short call: “I'd like to understand the feedback better. Could we talk for 10 minutes tomorrow?”
