How to correct a mistake in an email you already sent

Short answer: say “I want to flag an error in the numbers I sent. The corrected version is attached.”

DON'T SAY
“I hope nobody noticed…”
after an error
SAY THIS
“I want to flag an error in the numbers I sent. The corrected version is attached.”
Flagging your own mistake builds more trust than getting caught.

When to use it

Use it when you find an error in something you've already shared. Flag it yourself, right away, with the correction. People trust colleagues who catch and fix their own mistakes. Getting found out later does far more damage than the error itself.

Example

You: “I want to flag an error in the numbers I sent. The corrected version is attached.”

Manager: “Thanks for catching it.”

In an email or Slack message

Reply to the original email so everyone has the fix in one thread: “Correction: the Q2 total in my last email was wrong. Corrected version attached; the change is on row 12.”
