How to disagree with a plan at work

Short answer: say “I see a risk with that. Can we walk through the timeline together?”

DON'T SAY
“I don't know, that seems like it won't work.”
SAY THIS
“I see a risk with that. Can we walk through the timeline together?”
It names the concern and turns disagreement into problem-solving.

When to use it

Use it when you see a real problem in a plan but don't want to shut the conversation down. Naming the specific risk shows your concern is concrete, and inviting someone to look at it with you turns disagreement into shared problem-solving.

Example

Lead: “Let's launch all three markets in May.”

You: “I see a risk with that. Can we walk through the timeline together? Translation alone takes three weeks.”

In an email or Slack message

In a comment on a plan: “I see a risk here: translation takes about three weeks, which pushes two markets into June. Can we go through the timeline Thursday?”
