How to respectfully disagree with your boss

Short answer: say “I see it differently. Can I share another option?”

DON'T SAY
“I guess we could do it that way…”
SAY THIS
“I see it differently. Can I share another option?”
Respectful disagreement earns more trust than quiet compliance.

When to use it

Use it when you have a different view and the decision isn't final. Saying “I see it differently” is direct without being combative, and asking to share an option keeps it collaborative. If the decision still goes the other way, you've been heard.

Example

Manager: “Let's send the survey to everyone.”

You: “I see it differently. Can I share another option?”

Manager: “Sure.”

You: “We start with recent customers so the answers are fresher.”

In an email or Slack message

In writing: “I see this a bit differently and wanted to share another option before we decide:” followed by your option in two or three lines.
