How to tell your boss about a project risk

Short answer: say “We're on track. One risk: the vendor is late, and here's my plan.”

DON'T SAY
“Things are going okay, I guess.”
SAY THIS
“We're on track. One risk: the vendor is late, and here's my plan.”
Naming a risk alongside a plan shows ownership, not worry.

When to use it

Use it when a project is mostly fine but something could go wrong. Saying “on track” plus the one risk and your plan for it tells your manager the truth without alarm. It also means they won't be surprised later if the risk turns into a problem.

Example

Manager: “How's the rollout?”

You: “We're on track. One risk: the vendor is late on the hardware, so I've asked for a partial shipment Friday.”

In an email or Slack message

For a written weekly update, use three lines: “Status: on track. Risk: vendor hardware late. Plan: partial shipment Friday, I'll confirm Monday.” Your manager can scan it in seconds.
