How to ask a coworker for help effectively

Short answer: say “I've tried restarting it and checking the logs. What would you try next?”

DON'T SAY
“Can you help me with this?”
SAY THIS
“I've tried restarting it and checking the logs. What would you try next?”
Showing what you've tried saves their time and proves effort.

When to use it

Use it when you're stuck on a technical or process problem. Say what you've already tried, then ask what they'd try next. They don't waste time repeating your steps, and it shows you're not handing off your work.

Example

You: “I've tried restarting it and checking the logs. What would you try next?”

Engineer: “Check the config file. That bit me last month.”

In an email or Slack message

In a help channel: “Issue: export fails with a timeout. Tried: restart, checked logs (no errors). What would you try next?” This format gets better answers in shared channels.

Quick drill

When you're asked something you can't answer on the spot, especially by a manager or client.
