How to set boundaries on work messages

Short answer: say “I check messages until 6. For anything urgent after that, please call.”

DON'T SAY
“I'm always available, just ping me anytime!”
SAY THIS
“I check messages until 6. For anything urgent after that, please call.”
Clear availability sets expectations before they turn into resentment.

When to use it

Use it when you're starting a new role, working across time zones, or setting expectations with a team. Saying when you check messages and how to reach you for real emergencies prevents late-night messages and unmet expectations.

Example

New teammate: “What's the best way to reach you?”

You: “I check messages until 6. For anything urgent after that, please call.”

In an email or Slack message

Put it in your Slack status or email signature: “Online 9–6 ET. For urgent issues after hours, call.” It sets the expectation for everyone at once.
